5 tips to make the most of your doctor’s appointment

1 Be prepared: Keep a symptom diary so you have a reliable record of how you’ve been feeling. Make a list of your questions and concerns, with the most important ones first, and share them with your doctor at the beginning of the appointment. This will help your doctor focus your visit on what’s most important to you. And if you find it difficult to ask for or remember information from your doctor, feel free to bring a friend or family member along to help.

2 Know your meds: Bring a list of your current medications, the dosage you’re taking and the number of times a day you take it. Remember to tell your doctor how often you actually take it – not just how often you’re supposed to. And don’t forget to include supplements and over-the-counter drugs.

3 Express yourself: Share information about how you feel physically, emotionally and mentally, and what’s changed since your last visit. There’s no need to be embarrassed; your doctor has heard it all before, at least twice! If you don’t understand something, ask your doctor to explain it again.

4 Be honest: Tell your doctor your medical history and your current lifestyle. How much alcohol do you drink a week? Are you under stress? Everything you tell them is confidential and helps them see the full picture.

5 Keep an open mind: You may not get the answer you’re expecting, but if you work with your doctor, you can help find the treatment course that’s best for you.
